There are no letters of 1806, so that this batch were written after the Austens had been established at Southampton for more than a year. 'Our guests' in the thirty-sixth letter were James and Mary, who had been staying with their relations in Castle Square. There is little to observe in the rest of the letter, although one is glad to find that Captain Foote was not put out of temper by having to eat underdone mutton, and that Mrs. Austen's finances were in a satisfactory condition at the commencement of the new year.

'Clarentine' is, of course, Miss S. S. Burney's work, which other people besides Jane have thought 'foolish.' It is a novel of the most ordinary description, and not one which she would have been likely to approve. There is a playful allusion in these letters to the chance of Martha Lloyd's marriage; Jane could not foresee that this event would be delayed until her own brother Frank sought the lady's affection many years later.

Non ci sono lettere del 1806, e quindi questo gruppo fu scritto dopo che le Austen si erano stabilite a Southampton da più di un anno. I "nostri ospiti" della trentaseiesima lettera erano James e Mary, che erano stati con i parenti a Castle Square. C'è poco da dire per le altre lettere, anche se si può essere lieti che il capitano Foote non fosse irritato per dover mangiare montone al sangue, e che le finanze di Mrs. Austen fossero in condizioni soddisfacenti all'inizio del nuovo anno.

"Clarentine" è naturalmente il lavoro di Miss S. S. Burney, (1) che altre persone oltre Jane avevano ritenuto "sciocco". È un tipo di romanzo molto ordinario, e non uno di quelli che sarebbe stato probabile le potessero piacere. In queste lettere c'è uno scherzoso accenno alla possibilità del matrimonio di Martha Lloyd; Jane non poteva prevedere che quell'evento sarebbe stato ritardato fino a quando molti anni dopo il fratello Frank avrebbe cercato l'affetto di quella signora. (2)

(1) Brabourne scrive "S. S. Burney" ma l'autrice di Clarentine si chiamava Sarah Harriet Burney, sorellastra della più famosa Frances (Fanny) Burney.

(2) Frank Austen sposò Martha Lloyd nel 1828. Era rimasto vedovo nel 1823 e, nel 1843, rimase vedovo anche della seconda moglie. Fu l'ultimo a morire dei fratelli Austen, nel 1865 a novantuno anni.
